A lot of people call us wanting a price to fix their washing machine or dryer. We don’t provide that over the phone due to the inaccuracies of those quotes. Over-the-phone quotes can also add additional repair calls to solve one problem. Even virtual diagnosis often leads to someone on site.
We won't quote a repair on an appliance we haven't seen. We're not hiding the price from you. We don't know it yet, and neither will anyone who hasn't inspected your machine.
The thing you can tell us on the phone (the noise, the puddle, the soaking wet load) is a symptom. Symptoms narrow the list. They don't name the part, and until we know the part, any estimate is a guess.
We'd rather show up and test it.
The whole description is four words: my washer won't spin. It's accurate, and it's a sign of at least eight different problems:

What changes on-site isn't that we suddenly know more than we did on the phone. It's that we can measure things.
The multimeter is the difference between suspicion and a finding. It measures voltage, resistance and continuity. This lets us know whether a switch closes, whether a winding is intact, or whether power is arriving where it should. None of that is visible over the phone.
